Noted. It would be by no means a daily, I have other bikes to pull that duty. The starter will be removed once it's running regularly.

Honda made a 5 speeder as part of the race kit and Nova in the UK still make one for race or road.

You have a fantastic project with a very well-documented history. I agree with LM that you should preserve/restore it as a race bike. Th eparts in ther eare very special and from the notes it suggests that they have been running into the lubrication limits of the engine.

It would be an interesting project to solve some of the lubrication issues with modern knowledge.

Classic Honda Restorations has good prices on cables, especially if you buy a set. I've gotten several sets from them, and have yet to have a problem with them.
I agree that it would be nice to see this bike restored as a race bike rather than converted back to a stock appearance, but in the end, it's your decision what you want to do with it.
I'll look around to see if I have a spare starter chain.

Today I did some cleaning/wiring/mounting of stuff.

I do have a question regarding the ignition... those two holes closest to the end of the shaft have magnets in them. should I center them on the marker line?

In regards to the velocity stacks, I'd like to have some sort of filter over them... or remove them and go with modified air filter elements like this:

Finally, the starter motor and chain. Thanks to another forum member for sending me a chain, they're awfully hard to find... my one issue now is that there's far too much slack in the chain. I'm thinking of putting a spacer or washers between the case and the starter motor to take up some of the slack. It's not going to take much, so I think it will be feasible for now (until get the motor running again and take the starter off).

My next step is to finish up all the major wiring... I forgot how much of a pain that is, even though everything is color coded it is still mentally exhausting.
I also have a starter clutch rebuild kit coming, the one I have looks like it functions, but I may as well while its out. Those three screws holding the cover on are going to be a challenge to get out though, supposedly they're staked but I can't see any evidence of that.

After that I'll give the carbs a good cleaning, change the oil, clean out the filter and check the primary chain, check the valves and we should be good to try to get it started.

This is going to be 80% track bike. Once the bike is woken up I'll remove the starter and starter solenoid, but leave the charging system on.

I found some discrepancies in one of the notebooks, the engine/frame vins were different that that of the bike. This clarifies some of the discrepancies between the notes and the bike, but now means I can't guarantee that it has a 5spd transmission. We'll find out.

I'm also looking at doing a duplex chain conversion, and possibly upgrading the oil pump with one of the fancy cappelini ones.

After I open one bike pic and use the forward arrow I get all kinds of krap.
Not worth my time.

Ordered a duplex primary chain conversion from England... lead time is 12 weeks.

Should I order a duplex tensioner from cappelini?
