CL72 Fender brace cable loops

Post by sixtiescycle » Sun Feb 21, 2016 7:20 pm

I'm slowing using up my good parts and getting into the "repairable" pieces. This fender brace is probably the best of the junk ones I had. Lots of straightening and tweaking to get the fender to fit. So far so good. However the cable loops are broke off. I bought some 1/8"stainless tig rod, made a jig to bend it into the shape of the missing loops, then carefully drilled where the existing stubs were on the brace. Fit the new into the drilled holes and next will tig weld these on with 309L stainless rod. Hopefully this will come out okay and I won't need to rechrome the brace. Several years ago I successfully repaired a welded CL muffler that had been cut off so hopefully this will work again.

Had to change out the front forks on this too, PO put too long of bolts in the fender mounting holes.

Great job! It's always good to reclaim broken parts. Gives you a nice glow.....

One day I will have a TiG set.....

See, the process works! I got a great deal on mine under some bad circumstances. My employer shut down the business and everything was auctioned off. Fortunately I was tranfered to another division. A larger tig machine was transferred with us, they recently bought a newer one and I'm trying to buy the other one too......................don't ask me why........... ;-)
