Thanks for coming up with the answer. I had a vague recollection but wasn't certain. I was able to buy a surplus race-kit top triple clamp because the owner needed one for later forks.

Understood. If I look for a yoke with that recess on the underside, will that be the correct one?

Here is what I discovered someone had done to the top of one fork tube.
Why is it that some people think they instantly become motorcycle mechanics the day they purchase a used bike?
I will be looking for some Type 1 forks on E-Bay. Hopefully I can assemble 2 good forks from 4.

I realise now that the necessity came about because the alloy fork bottoms do not have the axle offset from the centreline like the early steel lowers had. The split clamp with two studs at the bottom meant that it was impossible to use the same geometry for the triple clamps.

Every day is a school day.....

R100 be careful when buying the early forks. You need the ones that are post '63 as the very early ones had fatter legs (so to speak).... :-)

R100............I have a set of steel-lower forks taken from a '64 CB77...........painted white.........I have not looked at them for a few years.............should be clean chrome at the seals and have good seal-holders. I can take a pic on Wednesday.

I would certainly be interested.
There is an E-Bay seller that has been helpful in the past, but I would much prefer to deal with a forum member.
G-man cautioned me about early "fatter" forks. The ones I need to replace are 33mm where they slide in the seals, and 32mm above the taper.
I was hoping that I would be able to build 2 good forks out of 4, but perhaps yours are in better condition.
Pictures would be great.

It is a mystery, some of them become self-taught electrical geniuses too.
