The pic in the book looks to ME like the sharp edge is out (thin line) but the round side goes toward the crank.
The rounded side of the nut goes toward the crank as the star washer is bent to the outside.
Install it with the sharp side in and you will spin the washer and remove the locator tab.
Put the 2 together in your hands and you will get the idea.
At present I've rebuilt apx. 50 engines so I know which side is out and why. .........lm

You are providing an opinion based on a sketch in a parts manual. If it is as you say with the chamfer to the outside does beg the question, why would Honda spec a part with extra tooling/machining for no purpose. The photo the OP provided does show the lock nut on backwards.

OP?

I forgot to mention that it is also chamfer out on my CB77. The scratch marks and lack of discolouration on the flat side show that it was assembled this way.

As for your question, who knows? It's a reasonable question though. Perhaps this isn't the only use for this nut.

Simple enough.

YOUR CB77 IS WRONG.

When you have as much time working on these engines as Tom and I do we will not excuse you being ignorant with this subject.
At present OK.
You will learn that some of us have a LOT OF HANDS ON knowledge with these bikes and engines.
Tom 575 posts.
Me 5510 plus I've been working with these bikes and engines since 1962.
YOU?. .........lm
