if I loosen lock nut on chain adj then rotate eng , turn adj screw/bolt to take up any slack then tightrn lock nut would that be proper way to do it ? also , can valves be adjusted without dropping eng for access to the intake side of things. .004 for the clearance? have been searching and reading all I can to learn about this , caught the note about reshapeing for a good measurement if needed. Hope I'm not askin dumb questions , needing comformation before I start. I also know I need to buy the books just haven't been able to yet. Thanks for the help . Oh yea, 68 305 Dream , 9000 or so miles on eng ,running good with new elec ign and wires , but do hear a little noise from the cam chain area . I have no idea if any maint. was ever done on this bike. Thanks again.

The cam adjuster is a spring loaded shaft that pushes on a wheel that rides against the cam chain. If you loosen the locking bolt the spring should push the shaft and adjust the cam chain.

However it is not unusual for the shaft to be stuck in its hosing so you get no adjustment. It is a fairly easy task (4 bolts) to remove the whole thing and check it. You can check the shaft movement and the condition of the spring and wheel.
