White smoke from left side over 5kWhite smoke from left side over 5kI am just back on the road with my CB77 after a long period of downtime, and I am starting to go further and faster.
But I suddenly noticed that I am getting a considerable amount of white smoke out of the left side when I really open up on the throttle. It kicks in about 5k, but I have to be accellerating. If I am cruising at 5k or above, then nothing. I suspect people are going to tell me its the rings. Compression is 155 on both sides, and I am pretty sure this is the orginal engine. Milage unknown. After all I have been through with this bike, I hate to contemplate a top end rebuild. But on the other hand, after a year of work, I am pot committed.... Any chance I could just be rich in the left carb? The left plug is pretty dark, but not black or wet or anything. Right plug more of a medium brown. Richness would usually result in black smoke. Sounds like rings as you say. You might be able to get away with removing any glaze from the bores and a new set of rings.
If it's not too bad you can just carry on riding for a while. Eventually the oil will start fouling plugs. G
