oil quantity in steering damper cl77

Post by dave305 » Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:26 am

I disassembled and zinc plated the steering damper on my 1966 cl77 but can't find out how much oil to put back in, should i fill it all the way up or is some air space suppose to be left.
Thank you for the help

Dave,

I did the same a while back, but didn't note the quantity. I do remember filling it all the way, and the damper didn't have full range of motion. You may have to experiment a bit with it. What oil are you using? I used Race Tech "01" basically 5wt.

I was thinking there should be some room for expansion of the oil to take into account the volume of the piston rod when it is fully collapsed or you would end up with a hydraulic lock.
As far as the oil I haven't bought any yet I have to get some oil for the forks and the rear shocks so i will use whatever weight they take. Do you know what weight everyone is using in the forks and shocks?

Many different opinions on that one! A good quality fork oil, at least 10wt for the forks is what I like to use.

You are right on that, everyone has there own idea on oil wt. I have rebuilt a lot of snowmobile shocks and changing oil wt makes a big difference in dampening if you leave the valving the same. I won't be moto crossing with this thing so i would think a oil heavy enough to keep the front end from nose diving when you hit the brakes will work just fine.

My front is diving when I hit the brakes.

Sounds like that means I don't have any oil?

Do they need to be bled or cleaned out, or can I just top up and go.

Keep in mind this is a barn find bike back on the road.

Thanks!

They will do that a Little.
Ya can remove the drain bolts then fill with new oil.
What books or other data have ya gathered? ...........lm
