This is a thread to document the teardown of a really corroded CB77 engine. If I get it all apart, and maybe find a donor engine, there will be a thread on the rebuild.

Basically, a cautionary tale of how bad it can get - I know there are worse, but this one is mine ;-)

Here goes.

As I got it:

The intake valve covers, crankcase side covers, cam tensioner, sparkplugs, left camshaft endcap/tach cable, and top engine cover had already been taken off.

I got the right cam end cap/cover off with a rubber mallet and some wiggling:

The bearing had frozen to the shaft.

After excavating and removing the two nuts holding the head to the cylinders, I was ready to take off the top end.

Unfortunately, easier said than done. Keep in mind, I had sprayed the entire engine with Freeze-Off (compare to Kroil, PB-Blaster, etc.) a couple days ago, including copious amounts in the top end and sparkplug holes. Some light persuasion with the mallet and a bunch of wiggling and fighting later, it came up off the studs:

A little rusty and corroded, but the valves look intact - not too bad...

What about the cylinders?

Houston, we have a problem.

I'll be taking a shop-vac to it later to remove the free rust, trying to clean it up a little before applying more penetrating oil. Looks like that trick with the gear puller might be warranted.

Wow, thanks for posting this, i feel a lot better about mine now. I also stumbled onto a superhawk for little money that needs a lot of work. Mine is frozen too but hopefully it doesn't look quite that bad once i get it apart. I'm just getting into it now. Motor is frozen and i haven't been able to locate the cam chain master link. I have the tensioner off and the oil pump. I'm hoping a better light and a little mirror might help me figure it out. I'd rather ot cut it yet.

Brian, If the engine has never been apart it won't have a master link.
I used a Dremel cut off wheel to remove the link. You'll have to buy a master link.

Wow!, looks like the insides of my 51 DeSoto...
Might want to look at this link on penetrating oil...looks like you may have the perfect candidate to try it out.

holy cow... yeah, I feel a lot better about the superhawk engine I have.

-- hey, those rims in the box ... are they for the cb77, and if so, where did they come from?
