Figured out my kick start issue

Post by listen2this1 » Thu May 31, 2018 11:18 pm

I knew going into this build that the kick start wasn't working. Since it hasn't run in 35 years I figured the spring in the ratchet system was bad. I was wrong. I'm guessing the bearing went bad and caused the shaft to seize. It got hot enough the gears on the shaft are seized. Now the hunt for a transmission.

Yep - you definitely need a new gearset!

Check out all of the oilways and the filter before you reassemble.

Did it have enough oil in it?
Can you tell if there was a full set of rollers?

How about the crankshaft?

Saw exactly the same on my elder brothers cb72 in 1966, it was 1 year old and well maintained. Fortunately we now know that if the kick start moves forward when the engine is running it's a sign that the shaft and bearings are probably starting to wear and need attention.
As G said, make sure there's no debris in the oilways and the crank.
Good luck with it.
Al.

Not sure about the oil. It had a good amount in it when I drained it but that was from 35 years ago. I had another set of eyes look over it and everything else appears to look good and have all the correct pieces. We did find a couple pieces or metal in the pan. Going to look over again tonight.

Any tricks or tips on how to clear the oilways?

I use pipe cleaners (soaked in solvent) and teapot brushes, but I am English. :-)
