Wheel building - CL77

Post by Glenn-N » Sat Mar 31, 2018 3:36 pm

I built my front wheel last week, no issues.
Used the spoke set from Classic Honda Restoration (Buchanan's Spokes).

Today I started to build my rear wheel and after some truing, all the spokes are protruding through the nipples.

Laced them up correctly I guess.

Left: front spoke (OEM Honda)
Middle: rear spoke (OEM Honda)
Right: rear spoke (CHR - Buchanan's)

Is this common, any people with the same experience? What do I do about it? File off the excess, use a Dremel?

Can't see anything wrong with your lacing up, I've seen plenty of wheel builders who make up their own spokes from plain blanks, cutting them to length and rolling the thread section to suit.

Grinding of the excess with an angle grinder was almost universal practice so doing that won't hurt, of course you could dismantle the wheel again and shorten the individual spokes which would be neater.

Hard to tell from the picture but the Buchanon spoke looks a bit thinner than the OEM one? Not a good idea if it is.

My first inclination would be to send the spokes back along with a picture of your completed wheel.

Thanks.

Thickness is exactly the same as OEM.
Tim (CHR) thinks I received a CL72 set from Buchanons. Will have my answer somewhere next week.

Don't really mind, but I was hoping for my first spring rides next week when the weather is getting better. Guess I'll have to wait for another 3 or 4 weeks.

Anyone who can verify that CL360 spokes will fit a CL77 (large hub)?
