new idea for ignition switch

Post by G3 » Mon Jun 08, 2015 12:06 am

1966 Scrambler.
Problem; For the second time, I've sheared the ignition key well into the tumbler while kick starting the bike. It catches on the pant cuff as I'm sure other CL owners know.
Short of taking the switch to an locksmith which I'll have to do, has anyone else relocated an ignition switch while leaving the original as a dummy or something similar to this? It's a real pain when it happens. It doesn't seem to be possible to recreate the original switch contact orientation with just any type of "on off" keyed switch.

Thanks,
Mike

If you are going to have locksmith services then you won't need any suggestion to replace the ignition. They will do it very safely and you van learn from them about the problem.

You could try potting the head of the key in resin and making it more like a simple knob. That would help support the key against accidental breakage.

Pour some resin into a soda bottle cap then insert the key into that until it sets.

My Moto Guzzi used to have a key like that.

If you are having trouble getting the broken key out of the lock, try using a #2 fishing hook(Long Shank) straighten it out at the bend and leave the barb alone, push it in on top of the key and twist so barb catches the key and then pull it out.

Any two position, two pole switch will do the job. The only difference is that you would no longer have the "park' position that powers the tail light with the key out(who uses it anyway?). Connect one lead(with a fuse) to the positive battery post and the other lead to the black wire in the harness, the plus terminal on one of the coils would be a handy spot or you could use the 'black" terminal on back side of the existing key switch.
