1964 Dream VIN's

Post by Raceman » Mon Dec 04, 2017 2:36 pm

The 1964 Dreams have three different VIN sequences. 1964 l ca78 100001- ?, 1964ll ca78
400001- ? and 1964lll ca78 1000001-?. My Dream is the 1964lll type with the 7 digit vin beginning with a 1. What are the differences in the 3, if any. My curiousity has the best of me.

Like LM - I don't know why the numbering was in turmoil in 1964.

1965 marked the discontinuation of the scheme which made the first digit the year of manufacture. From then on all the numbers began with 10 right up to the end.

I'm sure someone will enlighten us but it has led to lots of confusion over the years. There are plenty of 1964 bikes which have been identified as 1961.

I don't think there were any material differences across the three numbering schemes. The fitting of CA77 engines in CA78 frames is equally baffling......
