Speedometers

Post by ostdc » Wed May 04, 2005 8:26 am

Can someone give me some pointers on speedometers? If it doesn't work, what could be some easy things to check?
I'm new at this and I don't really even know how things work.
Brian

Brian, Welcom to the forum. You didn't say what you are working on (doesn't matter). I guess the first thing I would check is the speedo cable at the drive end(at the wheel) if you can turn the cable with your fingers and the MPH needle moves slightly than it could be the drive unit. If you take the cable off at the speedo head and ride the bike can you see the cable turn? If no than its the cable or drive unit. If you can see it turn than it's the speedo head. Most likely,,,it's a bad cable. But you never know till you check things out. Good luck and let us know what you come up with,Steve Greer

Well, I pulled the cable out of the lower unit and turned it with my fingers. It didn't make the speedo needle move. I gave the end of the cable a little tug and the bottom 10 inches of the cable came out in my hand. So, I guess I'll try to find a new cable.
Are they all the same length? Anything special I need to ask for?
Thanks.
Brian

I saw somone has the cable only for sale on e-Bay. But you need to measure what you have to be sure you get the correct length. If the new one is longer it can be cut down to length but a new square end will have to be stamped on. Most shops have that tool. Let us know how you come out. Steve greer

I talked to the local bike shop and they said that the part number of the speedo cable for a '68 CA77 is still valid and can be ordered. Is this suprizing to anyone? Should I order it?
Brian
