That number is a strainge one - the '8' prefix was used, I think, for high-pipe (CS) Dream Sport bikes but I didn't think they did those with the C78.

I'm sure someone will come up with an answer.

Attached are the Dream numbers - they usually start with a "10" after 1964....

Your engine should be CA77-......... which should give us another clue.

The engine number is close enough to assume it's the original motor...CA77E 1005562, I'm rather hoping one of our American experts could shed some light on all this.

Can you post pictures of engine & frame numbers, please? An engine number of CA77E is correct for a CA78...

I would like to see that frame number, though.

Just remembered. There is a white tag on the wiring harness somewhere inside the main frame spine which carries a date of manufacture of the harness. Obviously this cannot be later than the build date of the bike so it is a good guide.
