It would be good to see some pics of your bike. The saga of my '61 bike is here....

Hi G-man.
I somehow missed your post from August. I have been following your restoration and it is truly amazing! You have the patience of a zen master.

Here are some pix of my 1961 CB 72 - before and after. It wasn't nearly as crusty as yours, and a lot of pieces cleaned up pretty well. I rechromed the side panels and some of the drum brake linkage. I went from black to blue, just because I like it better, added Hagon shocks and Dunstall silencers, but other than that, tried to stay with NOS parts. I did pull the engine apart and replace the gaskets, but it still drips a bit of oil after running.

I do ride to work quite often, 25 mi. through New England backroads, so the bike is not as pristine as it once was, but it runs fairly well, and so far it has never left me stranded.
Now I'd like to get some repro or used mufflers and get rid of the Emgo Dunstalls, which are too loud for my taste...

Great job!

I remember your bike from a while back. I hope you kept the rear shocks and the original mufflers. They have value.

It must be quite a late '61 unless the engine has been replaced.

Thanks.
Still have the shocks. Traded one muffler to Tim Miller. It had a hole I could never repair - he could.

What is about the engine? The wiring harness said 1961, although it was titled for 1962. The previous owner said some rebuilding was done at approx 5K, not sure for what...

The early '61 engines had a tower breather at the back of the crankase. Later ones are missing that as the breather was transferred to the cylinder head cover.

My engine is #969......

Mine is CB72E 113427, so it looks like it towards the end of the first run for '61 export I think.
Is yours 10969?
