'65 dream not charging.'65 dream not charging.hi fellas,
i know there are a few posts on this topic already, but i still have a couple of questions.
i just got my ca77 running and it starts and runs great. after a while it sputtered out then died, and then wouldn't start. and after a lot of checking, i found that it would start and run well while being jumped with a car battery. when the jumpers are removed, it fades out after a few minutes. so i checked the voltage output - idle speed 11.4v -high rpms- 11.8volts. it seems to be charging a little but i guess not nearly enough. so any ideas on what the first step is in fixing this problem?
thanks
steve
Re: '65 dream not charging.you probably have a bad rectifier. radio shack has what you want for about $3.43

unfortunately, the link i need is on my fav list at work. i will post it for you tomorrow if you cannot find it on here somewhere.

a rectifier is a diode that is an electrical one way valve. it turns fluctuating current (alternating current [ac]) into one way current (direct current [dc])

if your 'valve' is busted, the current goes back and forth and does not charge your battery.
Re: '65 dream not charging.oh, the link was two posts down.

http://204.29.80.50/restore/diode/diode.html
Re: '65 dream not charging. liitle more infohey thanks for the reply,
let me tell what i've found out.
i installed a new rectifier. the voltage checked at the leads on the + & - of the rectifier is 11.9-12v i idle, then at medium high rpms it jumps around a bit. to 12.5 to 13 to 15 the for a second to about 20 then back to 12.2v. but directly at the battery the voltage goes from 11.6 idle to 12.0 med rpms. also, i noticed that the red/white wire to the + on the rectifier goes directly to that battery- unswitched and unfused. is this right?
one more thing. this is a 65 model, and i've read that they are a little wierd to wire up. it seemd direct to me. i have the red/white to +. the - to ground. and the pink and yellow to the ac terminals. (the pink wire changes to a tan at a near plug)
any hints?
is it possible i just need a new nattery? i have no idea how old this one it.
thanks again,
steve
Re: '65 dream not charging.sorry. the CA is beyond my experience.

i have replaced the rectifiers with those Radio Shack components on 3 bikes. a '71 honda 175 (6 volt) a Suzuki '68 T200 and my '67 CB77; it extended battery life and brightened the headlights.

i get lucky that Bill Silver wrote the Honda part of the article and it fits the CB exact.
