Starter Clutch Will Not Come off

Post by snootch21 » Mon May 29, 2017 1:49 pm

Hi,

If anyone could provide some advice on how to get the starter clutch off of this rotor, I'll be forever grateful. As you can see, it's rotated so now I can't get the screws out. I've used rubber grip wrenches to try and get it aligned with no luck. I picked this up on eBay because I was missing both parts on my CB77, but the starter clutch is missing all of the internal parts.

If this is already on the forum, then I apologize. It's not exactly easy to search on here and I've had no luck searching the internet.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Hi Joe,
You don't take it apart as all the bits go in from the center, springs, caps and rollers. Make sure the screws you have tried to take out are tight and then restake them with a punch or narrow chisel. Cheers Al.

Hi Al,

Thanks for the advice. I wanted to get it apart because I believe that one of the spring caps is stuck in place. I haven't been able to get it to budge. One of the springs was still in there and easily came out, but I just can't seem to get the other cap out.

The plan was to remove the screws, disassemble the clutch and replace all of the parts including the staked screws. They're stripped now, so I'm not sure what to do... frustrated.

So, after adding some WD40 and jostling the stuck cap with a pick, I was finally able to get it out. I cleaned all of the slots with a Q-tip soaked in WD40, too, just to clean things up. Obviously that cap was rusted in place. I'll make sure to clean the whole clutch up well, since I've been reading on here that you're not supposed to lubricate it.

Even though the screws are stripped, they never came loose and are still staked from before. Do you think I should just buy a rebuild kit and call it a day?

Yes, I would put new parts in and like you say, no lube or grease.
cheers Al.

Hi Joe, sorry to hijack the thread from Alan.
If you want to rotate the outer ring to access the screw heads there is a method which I have used with some success. Put a socket on the crankshaft side of the starter and grab it in a soft jaw vice so that it won't turn. Put a strip of emery cloth around the ring and put a hose clip(jubilee clip) over it and tighten it up so that the emery strip is gripping the ring. Then tap the clip in the direction you want. I use this method to remove the chrome trim on early front forks, with masking tape instead of emery cloth when a strap wrench won't work. If you want to remove the screws, put a correct screwdriver tip into the screw head and clamp it up in the vice then back the vice off a little while holding on to the starter. Then put a spanner on the screwdriver tip and there is enough play there for you to break the tension on the screw.
Hope this helps.
Regards Brian.(Al's evil twin in Australia)
