Help with Points

Post by thepunisher2007 » Fri Apr 07, 2017 3:22 am

Im having a terible time trying to get my 1965 CL77 to start. I have spark and fuel but it has recntly camee to my attention that the early model CL77 may need a single point rather than the twin that I have. I have the timing set correct as far as i am aware and used the bulb to set the ingition time to fire on the right marks. Only thing i spotted was that the points are still in the fire posion as the inlet valves start to open (im convinced this isn't right but an not an engine expert).
Best i can muster so far is the odd flame out of the exhasust or the carb. I am not sure what else to check.
Here is a pic of my points hopfull somone could tell me if iv made a balls up and i should have a single point system?

Thanks in advance Mike

Is that Norwich in the UK,

A standard 1965 will definitely need both sets of points unless it is a Japanese Home market model or someone has swapped the crankshafts, both unlikely.

It sounds as if someone has timed it up wrong and either the valve timing, ignition timing or both are set incorrectly.

Take out both plugs and turn over the engine until one piston is at the top, the other one should be at the bottom,

What does your alternator rotor look like, does it have timing marks T, F, TL and TF, or just T and F.

If you're in the UK I can talk you through a lot of this on the phone.

Hi there

Yes im in just north of norwich UK so a chat over the phone at some point would be great.

the rotor does have T,F,TL and TF and when the one piston is up the other is down so that sounds all promising.
I found a video on Youtube on how to set the points and I believe I Have them right but the valve timings im not 100% about (would this be down to the cam chain being off by a link or 2 or somthing else). The top dead center mark on the cams and the T on the rotor are in the correct position but i think i will recheck the valve gaps again. Other than that im not sure what else to check or adjust?
