Speedometer Packing

Post by Seadog » Fri Mar 24, 2017 8:20 am

I'm replacing the speedo packing on my CB77 today and found that the old one was glued down with something I cannot identify. Maybe rubber cement? Anyone have any idea what this stuff is? Is the packing supposed to be sealed to the chrome speedo ring at all?

Seadog

I can't say I know what it is or exactly why its there, but I used a thin coat of black silicone when I replaced the packing on my CL77.

Thank you, Paul. Wherever it was cleaned up nicely with acetone on Q-tips. I have some clear silicone I'll use sparingly when I reinstall the packing. As a note to anyone reading this, my packing definitely has a front and back. Best to dry fit first.

Seadog,

It's like weatherstrip adhesive, and that's what I use. That bracket and rubber mount to the bucket so the speedo needs something to bond it to the rubber to keep it from moving around.

Thank you, HT. I ended up using a black silicone general purpose Permatex adhesive sealant that's for exterior use. It needs to cure for 24 hours, then I'll reinstall.
