Replacing oil seal.

Post by j.messina » Thu Feb 23, 2017 9:36 pm

I've got oil in the alternator area of my 64 Dream.
Can someone walk me through replacing the seal and re- installing the kickstarter?
I've got the right side cover off.
I've worked on other Hondas just new to Dreams.

Remove the starter motor so you can unhook the chain, remove the stator windings, undo the small bolt holding a retaining plate that sits in front of the sprag clutch sprocket. Remove the rotor bolt, you will then need an extractor which is really just a bolt that you screw into the rotor centre to push the rotor off the taper. You will find a large oil seal sitting in the crankcase that will need replacing plus a small one sitting in the sprag clutch body. While you have it apart check the tightness of the screws holding the starter clutch body to the back of the stator, mine were loose.
It's a bit of a fiddle to get the rollers and springs back into the starter clutch assembly but takes patience more than anything. Check the condition of the springs while you have it apart, they seem prone to falling to bits.

It's really not difficult to re-install the kick start lever. Use this link to review a discussion about replacing the right side cover and clutch cable. At the very end, you'll see how to handle the kickstart lever. Bookmark the link for future reference.
