The stock transmision is a wide jump between first and second. The stock transmission, has a close jump between third and fourth. Crossing the gears, makes the first to second shift a close ratio, the jump from second to third is almost unchanged, but the wide jump now comes between third and fourth. You have to make sure you stay in third longer, or it will bog in fourth. If you ever have to have your transmission apart, that's a good time to do it. The thing is though, the taller you go on sprocket size, you make the jump between first and second, feel wider.

Too bad I didn't know about this last year, as that's when I had my tranny redone. Ah well, I suppose since I've been riding it for this long as it is, I've kinda gotten used to it.....

Well I picked up the bike today after its latest (and hopefully last!) round of mods. It was VERY chilly on the bike (about 40F) so I wasn't in the mood for a long ride, and it was getting dark (I know, I'm becoming such a wimp in my 40's). The K&N filters look awesome, and the chromed pegs/brackets -- well, what can I say...you'll have to judge for yourself when I post the photos. All the exhaust leaks are fixed, the 30 tooth sprocket is on, new K82 rear tire, blah blah blah. The only thing that may need to be done is to change the slides in the Amals from 3's to 2 1/2's, because the K&N's might now be causing the bike to run lean, but we'll have to see about that.

I'll post some photos of the latest when I have a chance!

Well here are the final mods in all their shiny glory. The K&N filters utilise old metal filter frames from stock air filters, and the venting tubes simply attach to the spigots on the frames (they don't go into the filters themselves).

Here are the air filter shots. Can't say if there's a power increase because I've only ridden it a short distance from the shop to home....I'll let you know how it is when I put more miles on it.

As a follow up to the air filter mods, There is some debate as to whether it's a good idea not to have those vent tubes going into a filter, so that aspect may end up changing....stay tuned for all the drama!

Update: Just going to add a couple of small crankcase vent filters to the tubes and should be fine.
