Pirsig's Zen bike has resurfaced.

Phil, thanks for posting the images, Strangely I've just finished reading the book after several attempts, if I'm honest I found the sections about the ride more gripping than the philosophy but perhaps I'm a bit of a philistine.
Can you give some details about how that rear carrier is fixed on, I'm hoping to fit a similar carrier to my own CB77 for some touring next year but haven't finalised the mountings yet, I've seen them fixed to the rear fender but I know from experience this isn't a good idea, the Pirsing bike doesn't seem to be done that way. He carried a lot of kit a long way on his bike and I don't recall reading about the carrier falling off! Some pictures would be great. I've my own ideas on this but seeing his solution would give me confidence to do the same thing with my bike.
I already have the carrer and it looks much like the one on this bike.

Ive had a carrier on my CB77 and it is mounted at the top of the rear suspension and extended forward several inches and clamped to the frame with u bolts. Was origionally tied to the rear mudguard but that collapsed under the load.

Any chance of a picture or two showing your fixing method.

In theory the rear fender, being curved in both directions should be quite strong but experience shows it isn't the ideal place to fix a carrier. I suppose once you have one it's easy to overload it.

I'd thought of fitting a pair of tubes backwards from the CYP seat mounts and then picking up the standard seat bolts with a bracket before going back another few inches to pick up on the carrier itself,

I'm open to other suggestions particularly if you've developed something that's tried and tested.

The pic appears to show CL77 shock covers. The book has been updated with a different ending.

Thanks for the images, they have given me another avenue to think about, I have a sixties UK made carrier and (heavy) top box, it looks pretty much like the one on the Pirsing bike but was originally supplied with an inverted U shaped bracket that sat on the rear fender. I don't like that idea so my carrier will need some modification either way before I can use it.,
