David Silver Clutch Push Rod

I've just fitted an aftermarket clutch push rod from David Silver, after a 10 mile run the clutch adjustment became way out, on inspection the ball bearing had worn a dish in the end of the rod, the end could not have been hardened. David Silver can only offer a refund but because there are no alternatives I tried heating the end to dull cherry then a quench in old engine oil, (can't test it just yet because the crank oil seal needs fixing...).
Has anyone else bought one of these things?

I've not bought one of those but it might settle down now that the bedding in has taken place. In the beginning you only have point contact. As the contact gets greater the wear will reduce.

Heating and quenching will only work if there is a high-enough carbon content in the steel to begin with. If it is mild steel that won't work.

Thanks G, I was hoping it may pick up some carbon from the old engine oil!. Good thinking about the contact point, as it is I've nothing to lose except more oil if I put the old rod back.

If the hardening doesn't work you could try getting some compound called Kasenit. You bury the part for sime time at red heat and the carbon migrates into the steel allowing it to be hardened and tempered.
