Frame engine numbers. VIN

Post by wirenut77 » Sat Jul 02, 2016 10:25 am

Hi kids. I'm trying to nail down as much as possible the vintage of my sweet little beast.
The engine number has 7 digits - CA77E 1008637. Which as far as I can determine started in '64.
The motor number has 6 digits - CA78 100858. Which as far as I can determine ended in '64.
Also I think the 77 and 78 designations only met in '64.
How am I doing so far?

So I think I have one that was made with a later '64 frame and a motor from an earlier '64 batch.
Can anyone confirm this or give me a different and better reading on this pleasurable conundrum?
It's pretty much original with expected patina except the seat that was redone in Mexico, while the bike was living in Arizona in the 70s. The rear of the seat is higher than the front King/Queen style. Custom.
And (big surprise ) the shark fins are missing.
