Again, thanks.
After church today I went out to the shop, used the vernier, and tapped the assembly from the ends until I got equivalent outer bearing recess on each end, sufficient to allow the head covers to seal, ( about .155 depth to allow for the .150 cover protrusions. All looks good.
In retrospect, your advice on bottoming out the inner bearing race against the cam gears to insure the cams were 'home', followed by 'the covers center the cam' were most helpful. I just had to pause a moment to think about that last piece of information.
