CB77 | B160 Model Year

Post by blikeh2o » Wed Apr 06, 2016 4:43 pm

I am in need of some help in identifying the model year for my two Hondas. The frame numbers are as follows:
CB77 Frame = CB7710338XX
CB77 Engine = CB77E10296XX
B160 Frame = B16010697XX
B160 Engine = B160E1069XX

The only reference material I have on hand is the Parts Manual for the CB72/77, CP77 and CYP77. The Frame and Engine No History ONLY includes '60-'64 Type(2) in this document.

I have also ordered the Shop Manual and Bill Silvers books to see if this information is contained in those documents. If there are any other documents that will help in determining the model year please provide.

Your input would be appreciated as I am in the process of trying to register both bikes.

The frame # is your vin # and they are really only serial #'s of production.
The date that appears on a registration or title reflects the year of initial purchase, so an earlier production bike may appear to be newer if it sat on a dealer's floor for a few years.

my cb77: 1967 CB7710306xx
my cb160: 1966 CB16010263xx

the frame & engine # may help when replacing parts.

hope this helps or clarifies,
Allan

I can't help you with your 160, but I'm going to take a stab at the age of your CB77, others can correct me if I'm wrong.

7 digit serial/frame numbers started in 1965 and continued to the end of production in 1967 at serial number 1056432. I've read production numbers - don't ask me where I saw them, I don't remember, I just jotted them down for reference. In 1965, 17,319 CB77s were built. Therefore, 65s are serial numbers 1000001 - 1017320. In 1966 17,942 were built, so 66s are serial numbers 1017321 - 1035263.

It looks to me that your CB77 is a 1966. To check, look at the white tag on your wiring harness. There should be a date on it.

Here are some other dating features outlined by Bill Silver:

"Carburetors: Late-series carburetors had all the excess casting flanges/flashings removed from the rear of the throttle slide areas.

Fenders: the last 348 bikes had chromed fenders and an oval-shaped tail light, starting at CB77-1056084.

Handlebars: The riser bars actually came in with the 1966 editions, but continued on through the end of production.

Seat: The 'lipped' seat, with the raised section which rode up the back of the fuel tank, was also a 1966 series part, which was continued until 1967.

Horn: The 1967 bikes used a cheaper, plastic-cased horn, in place of the standard heavy metal version.

Fuel tank: At CB77-1052488 Honda deleted the crossover tube, normally strung beneath the fuel tank, connecting with the petcock. Matching 1967 petcocks had no crossover tube connections.

Mufflers: CB77-1050970 was the start of the 'one-piece' muffler systems."

Thanks to G-Man for posting this chart, probably more time than he cares to remember:
