Judging from the pictures they look like they have been run through a 0.9 pitch die........

I think I will heli-coil mine.

Dynamo cover screws

Post by eamartin » Thu Mar 10, 2016 7:28 am

Wow! Quite a bit of chatter on this topic since I posted 1 week ago. I emailed mrmegapack last Friday asking if they shipped to the US - no answer. I just re-checked my screw and it is the .90 pitch; so it would seem that the David Silver item would not be correct. G-Man, do I understand you correctly, that you have some screws coming from mrmegapack?

Yes - wrong pitch, unfortunately.....

I'm going to helicoil mine to take ISO screws. It's fixed for all time then......

I didn't go to the bother of helicoiling, just retapped the existing threads to ISO on my CA77. That's been several years ago, they seem to hold fine. I had the side cover off and started the tap from the inside. I honestly can't remember why, but I came to the conclusion that I'd have a better result if I did. There's not a lot of stress on those screws and I make sure not to over tighten them.

I've also seen #10-24 screws threaded into the holes instead of the M5 JIS. I am curious if there is enough metal to drill and tap 6MM holes if the original threads are too far gone and you want to keep it metric. Anyone try that one?

I just ordered some from an eBay vendor after he confirmed the .90 pitch. I will report back.

The screws arrived and I believe they will work. The pitch is correct. Screws are 15mm as opposed to the 12mm I removed from the bike. I have not checked yet to see the depth of the case holes. If they're not deep enough I'll just shorten the new 15mm screws. At this point, these new screws from the eBay vendor appear to be a good solution.
