Ed,
Is that the correct tail light for that bike? Mine was more square and the one on Paul's bike is rounded. Maybe a 1967 thing?

Correct for the '67...........not interchangeable unless you change the fender and grab-bar........the mounting holes are different.

Paul..........if that rust won't clean up with a good polishing...........nice units are available for same or less than re-chrome cost. Same unit was used on CL160-175, CB450 and others.

Thanks for the heads up with JD. I was thinking about that ever since you told me you had your rear shocks and brake linkage chromed without disassembly.

I do have the chain guard, although it looks like it cracked in half at some point and was very crudely welded back together. I will need to find someone to work on it. Perhaps the paint guy you mentioned previously?

Today I finished the teardown portion of my project with a couple of mishaps:

Does anyone know if the threaded rod that holds the rectifier together can be replaced. I twisted the smaller diameter end off. Is there a replacement available? Do other models use the same rectifier?

Also, can anyone tell me how many bearing balls are in the top and bottom steering stem races? (Yea, didn't see that one coming!)

I have a few spare rectifiers (used)........I could send 2 for the postage...........that way one is sure to work.

Bearings...........Its been a while but I seem to remember 19...........but I have counted 18 on the lower more than once. Someone should confirm. I have a jar full of spares.

Parts books show 38 bearings.
However in fact 19 go at the bottom and 18 go at the top. .....................lm

Yeah, that ball bearing thing is fun when you take it apart the first time and don't think about it. I scoured the floor with a magnet the first time I did it. If I remember right, and after speaking with others on this forum in the past the chain guard on that year bike was rather weak in some points. In terms of the paint guy--yeah, he would do that as well. And I know it is not original but I purchased a rectifier off of Ebay that seemed to be more "with the times" if I remember right.
