front wheel and triple tree

Post by redtr4 » Mon Feb 22, 2016 9:00 am

Restoring a 65 305 superhawk.. thought front wheel was salvageable but rust is really bad.. question.. will any year front wheel from a superhawk fit my 65 or was there a change in diameter of the hub size (drum diameter)? Same question applies for the triple tree as may have problem with out of round on bottom clamp on one side. Any help greatly appreciated.. and if anyone has decent front wheel or triple tree for sale pls msg me .. thanks Kurt Schneider

O believe me.. Im an Ebay master.. just was trying to check other sources.. have a couple im watching now.. but one looks like the hub (brake drum) may be slightly smaller.. hence the question.

brake drums !!!

Post by hondauser » Mon Feb 22, 2016 11:27 am

excepted early SLS drums , the following DLS drums are almost the same or can be adapted with Minors modifications ;
even the CB450 drum can be Useful , exept the 40 spokes , the axle is 15 mm and the shoes are the sames as CB77
saw a quantity CB77 & CB450 on eBay at very attractive price !!!

dig on the forum , topic has been raised several times about different drums !!!

Hubs are the same but triple clamp changed several times with very early then later steel-bottom forks followed by aluminum-bottomed forks. Aluminum sliders use different spindle but hub is the same.

I solved the triple tree prob... but still have question about consistency of 305 front hubs... like i said my wheel is very rusty.. there is a somewhat nicer one on ebay now at low price but the guy took the time to post pics of the inside of the drum with ruler across.. I dont have the exact specs in front of me but there was least half inch difference of inside diameter (ID) of his hub compared to mine.. no way would my shoes mesh correctly in his hub... thoughts??

I have CB72/77 hubs from '61 to '66 and I'm pretty sure they are all the same diameter. Maybe the seller (or you) has a CL hub. Pictures would help......
