Hi, I'm considering purchasing a Superhawk project. Assuming reasonable maintenance, how many miles will the 305cc engine go before it's worn out and needs rebuilt? Is there a rule of thumb?

while it depends how it was taken care of , a mid 60's Honda engine will never last as long as a new Honda. if properly maintained 15,000 to 20,000 miles before it needs rebuilding is about it in my opinion. my all original , never restored CA77 that i have owned since 1973 has just over 10,000 miles and i consider the engine 1/2 worn out. my original CB77 that i have only owned about 15 years (and i know nothing about it's past, but appears well taken care of) has 16,000 miles on the odometer and could probably benefit from some work to the engine. at the rate i add miles to either of them they should last me the rest of my life  Yeah, I figured everyone would jump in on this topic. The reason I was asking is I am looking at two Superhawks. One is at the 20K mark and the other at 31K. Both seemed like a LOT of miles but not being experienced with the 305 engine I wasn't sure. I know the level of care makes all the difference but since both are decent looking bikes I assume the engines were also given a reasonable level of care.
just don't go by what's on the odometer. what is the history of both bikes? have they been rebuilt in the past? or maybe a different motor has been installed? Honda frame numbers and engine numbers NEVER match so you never really know for sure...How do they run?
that's the difference between knowing the REAL history and how it appears none of the old Hondas or women you meet are virgins.... they can look real good and but have some problems you don't know about until you get to know them....or the plain ones can be the real treasure. you just have to figure out out messed they are before you hook up with them.
Probably a bit late for this topic but my CB77 has 130.000miles on it. it is a one owner, me. It is on its 4th crankshaft, unknown bore size except it is bored to 350. Carbs except for main jets are original, also most of the gearbox. Not to sure of the clutch. Averages about 67 miles to the gallon, British size gallon. Nowadays with modern oils I change it at 1000 miles so I hope this current crank outlasts the others. roughly 30.000 life. So with a little bit of care and attention these bikes will last.
