Cam Nut direction Rt or Lf?

Post by Hank Dymale » Fri Feb 12, 2016 1:08 pm

I would appreciate some help in determining the right direction to tighten the cam locking nut on my '67 CL77. I am confused (being an old fart) when I read right versus left direction (relative to what?) Basically could someone tell me if I am tightening or loosening the nut when it moves toward the cam sprocket. If I turn the nut the other direction it will press up against the bearing and cause the cam shafts to bind against the cylinder head covers.

FYI - I tried someone's idea to heat up the head to about 200 degree F while cooling the shafts and bearings outside in our subzero weather. It worked like a charm with very little pounding on the bearings being required.

Thanks for all your help. This forum is just what I need to assemble my bike.

Cam nut direction

Hi, Hank. Camshaft nut is left hand thread. If you are on the right hand (points) side of the cylinder head turn the nut anticlockwise so that it tightens towards the cam sprocket. Make sure that the line on the points cam points towards the o marked tooth on the sprocket so that both are at twelve o'clock when setting the timing. I also cool the camshafts and bearings in the freezer and warm the head with a hot air gun to make assembly easier. I find it easier to insert the right hand camshaft first so that I can look into the cam sprocket from the left to make sure that the right side camshaft engages the advance mechanism correctly. Good luck with the rest of your rebuild.
