How do you get the plug wires out of the coil

In most cases, you don't - they are molded in. On some replacement coils, the spark plug lead screws into a socket and pin in the coil. Look VERY carefully where the lead goes into the molded body and see if there is a very tiny gap between the wire and the body - if not, you are out of luck.

You should be able to buy a "spark plug lead splice" at better auto parts stores.

Thank you very much for the reply. It appears my choices are to buy a new coil with leads or the splicer.

Not so fast.... Can't remember where it was posted (perhaps here) but there was an in-depth post on how to cut away part of the coil molding where the wires go in, remove the wire and replace with new wire, and then seal it all up again with JB or something similar. Seemed like a pretty simple job.
Might be worth a try.
Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always had.

Just took the coil off and underneath was a hard glob of something under each wire. I chipped it off and there was a what appeared to be small diameter hole filled with this stuff. I drilled it out and with a bit wiggeling the wires pulled out. There is a spike at the bottom. I am going to get some plug wire, try to push it in.

You got it! Those little spikes should have a very fine thread that will dig into the centre of the plug wires. Don't use JB Weld. If you want some seal/support for the wires, screw the wires in and just use a little hot glue where the wires meet the coil body - it is very pure and wont cause arcing.
