1964 CL 72 oil leak

Get a 16mm x 1.5 bolt (sometimes the rear spindle will work) and screw into the thread inside the rotor. Do the bolt up tight, then tap the head with a hammer. The rotor shoudl come loose.

Thanks, Just tried that. Threads on my rear spindle are finer than the threads in the shaft. Guess I will go shopping for the right unbolt.....unless u have other ideas.....

I thought the rotor was threaded onto the shaft, but from your reply the rotor must just slide on the shaft and is properly located via a key way, so I will need to be careful not to put it back on 180 degrees off, correct?

The rotor is on a taper with a woodruff key to locate it at the right position. It can only go back one way....

Just noticed it was you gman, your kickstarted knuckle is working great. My old one is all welded, lathed and ready if needed!

Found a bolt! So now the rotor is off. I'm assuming the seal is behind the black metal cover. The cover is well sealed with a nice bead of grey silicone leaking through the gap, but the oil seemed to be coming from behind the stator.

Does this cover just pry off?

The black part you can see is the seal. I can see some drillings in the shaft next to the seal. If you have a CL those shouldn't be there as they lubricate the starter sprocket bearing on a CB. Can you poke anything in to those holes? How far?

I was able to probe a small diameter stiff wire 1.75 cm straight down in to the shaft. The hole is at 12 o'clock. The other image that appears to be a hole is bit of dirt.

Hope oil I can't leak out of that hole...no starter to lube up on this bike.

Now that I open my pack of seals I see one that matches up to that large black disk!

Any ideas/advice on prying this seal out?
