My Dream tops out at 56MPH. This is actual speed via my iPhone.

305 top speed

Post by zookeeper » Thu Dec 03, 2015 5:47 pm

Long long ago, back in the 60's when I owned a few 305 Scramblers I can say I probably tried the top end a couple of times like most foolish young men do. But it was so long ago I couldn't remember if my life depended on it. I will have to say that my old stock 305 scrambler has always been my favorite bike. I have always been a big old boy, so I used it for trips, hill climbs, and everything else we did then. I was told it was to nose heavy for jumping, but I always just stepped back on the rear pegs and had no trouble with it.

Forgot to tell you but the photo is of what was done to a 305, and I liked it back. I was the only person any of us knew was riding a chopper.

The stock gearing is too short. The engine will easily pull more gear. My next mod will be either a one-tooth larger front sprocket or two teeth less on the rear. The Dream also doesn't need to be dragging that big, heavy 530 chain around either, a 525 would be better (after thinning the sprockets).

The above, plus a slightly larger carbie, would make the Dream just about perfect.

I've also got a spare Scrambler engine under the house, maybe use that cam in the Dream (after twisting it for the 360 crank)...

The Dream already uses a 525 chain.

That's right, meant 520. Some tuners used to run 520 on their Triumphs for the same reason.
