A newbie's 1965 CL72 work in progress thread

Post by formasfunction » Sat Nov 03, 2007 10:31 pm

I was looking around ebay for parts for a 1962 CL72 I just bought and I saw a big bore kit to bump it up to 267cc. Does anyone have any experience with these? I can't find anything on the net about them.

[EDIT] I've renamed this post as I'm going to make it a work in progress thread as I work on the bike. Up until monday I was working on and riding a 1975 CB550 until someone pulled out in front of me (100% the other person's fault) and clobbered it. http://sohc4.net/ had been my previous haunt and I couldn't ask more from a community. I'm hoping to find the same thing over here.

A 1962 CL72 would be rather rare. May we/I know the frame and engine numbers?. .....................lm

Serial Numbers

Post by formasfunction » Sun Nov 04, 2007 12:56 pm

Sure thing. Here are the serial numbers:

Frame = 1005114
Engine= CL72E-1005126

I was going by what was on the title but I know those things can get mucked up over the years. Judging from this article http://www.vjmc.org/techtips/carbondating.htm it looks like mine is probably a 1965.

I thank you for the numbers and your bike is a 1965 for sure. If you want to get the bike looking good and ride I see no reason the go Over Size because the bike will reward you as a 250 Scrambler should when it was stock bore. I owned and rode a 1962 and a 1963 and never was concerned as to the power. I wanted (and still do)my engine to perform well and dependable. If you think you need more power get another bike because part of owning and riding a collectible CL72 is to enjoy what you have and forget that once many years back you may have another Small Bore bike pull up next to you at a red light and you HAD to Beat Him at the Green. Also now days others really want a STOCK/ORIGINAL bike to put their $$$$$$$$$ on. I have and can sell you a S12 kit complete but think you will be making a mistake and the cost would be $40.00 plus $5.00 mail. . Just my opinion. .......................lm

I'm with you

I appreciate the advice and I think I'll stick with a stock setup like you recommended. The bike is in surprisingly good shape. Spraying a little bit of starter fluid in the carbs allows it to start right up and I think the only thing keeping it from pulling in gas is the rust from the tank clogging the petcock and possibly the carbs. My first order of business is taking the tank somewhere to get sealed on the inside. I've heard I can take it to a radiator repair place as their processes is almost identical to sealing a gas tank, do you guys have any experience with this?

Also, it's missing any sort of filtering coming off of the carbs. Can you recommend any cheap clamp on filters (like K&Ns) until I have the money to buy an original assembly? They don't seem to come cheap.

Here's a pic of the bike before I washed her down yesterday:

Thanks for the pic. As usual a previous owner has removed or changed parts. Ride and enjoy. .................lm

Great looking bike! So what if the pipes are off a different bike, it still looks good, and not too far from original. Most people would never know.
I agree with LM on the big bore. With these bikes it should only be done if the cylinders demand it to maintain compression.
