Looks like a dowel pin inside. Not having this split yet, is this a pin that keeps the bearing from rotating? It was filled with "liquid aluminum" and popped out when I picked at it.

Yes it is.
Someone didn't index the bearing case properly and it was pushed through he case.
I remove the pin then put it into the case just enough to allow the pin to fit into the bearing case then J B Weld the case you see now. ...............lm

Thanks, LM. I think this perhaps the cause of the oil around the stator, which now needs to be de-greased. Suggestions on de-greasing that would not harm the windings?

Under bright light and magnification, it appears the pin did line up properly with the reamed locator hole, the dowel pin looks to be a 6mm, and will rotate in the hole. The hole does not appear to be damaged.What appears to have happened, judging by the appearance of the plug that popped out, is that a piece of hard debris was in the locator hole when the crank/bearing ass'y was fitted/torqued down, and broke the thin casting out directly under the dowel pin.
I'll know more when I open it up, but don't think it is as bad as it looks, and some epoxy should do the trick.

Use any Parts Cleaner but not Carb Cleaner.
In my opinion it is necessary to split the cases to push the pin out.
The depth is determined by the depth of the hole in the bearing case.
When the cases are back together I put J B Weld on the area you show and that stops the oil leak. .................lm

How far [deep] into the outer bearing race does the locator pin seat? Is it a press or slip fit into the bearing race? I think this perhaps the cause of the oil around the stator, which now needs to be de-greased. Suggestions on de-greasing that would not harm the windings?

I just noticed that the pin may be HOLLOW.
If I'm correct it is the wrong diameter at the bearing case and that's what pushed it through the case.
Maybe I'm wrong as to the pin being hollow?????????????????????. ..........lm

From what I remember that bearing locator pin is a solid 7mm pin to fit in the case with a reduced 5mm end to locate the bearing race, but my parts books don't show it and the online fiche shows a 7mm dowel. Was the 7mm dowel used on the early bikes when the crank used the ball bearing on the right side? Can you shed some light on this, Ed?
