Lastly, here's the rectifier. It's getting old, I think I'll buy a new one to replace it but until this most recent disassembly performed it's job just fine.
There is electrical tape and liquid electrical tape on the connections to the rectifier to guard metal of the side cover from touching. (Just extra precaution)
Flickering lights, grounding issue on headlight CA72.

The wiring diagram shows a Black in (12 volt) and a Black out to the horn button.
Is that the wire you have going to the switch which I see along the frame?
If so you should/may find a Black wire to nothing in the headlight bucket.

When this bike was built the first time, I left it open because it made no difference in the use of the bike. The horn is hooked to this other black wire and then the other end of the horn is connected to the handlebar switch.

DD,
I don't know how much help I can be due to the use of non original color coded wires since I can't tell what I'm positively looking at. Some questions first. Your left handlebar switch should have 4 wires coming into the headlight bucket, red, blue, green and black. Do you have all four and have they been re-wired with different colors? Did you say that both filaments light up in the headlight when you put the switch to high?

I have 4 wires coming from my left handlebar switch. They are green, light brown, light orange and light aqua green. This is the switch that came with the bike I don't know if it's standard (they're faded colors, of course).
The aqua green is the horn wire, the light brown is the high beam, the dark blue is low beam, the is the ground. I have tried flip flopping some of these wires around and it made the headlight and horn not work, correctly so I presume that looking at the handle bar switch at the contact pads inside I have the right combination.
The high beam (light brown) is Y soldered in with the high beam bulb indicator so they both turn on at the same time.
You can see me holding a loose bundle of cables in the back of the bucket, these are coming from the switch.
In this second picture, you can see the aqua green wire from the handlebar switch going into one of the horn connectors, and the other side of the horn going out into the 12v black live wire.
