Stuck engine help

Post by STJ » Sun Oct 25, 2015 6:11 pm

New to this forum, not to restoring, I restored a 72 Suzuki a few years ago ( TM 250j )
I have had this one in the back corner of the shop for some time and now have the engine out and trying to get the pistons un stuck. It was free until it sat for a long time in the shop. I was hoping to take the head off but the master link to the cam chain isn't on top. Any suggestions on freeing things up.
I think from the vin it is a 68, black frame grey tank, chrome fenders, steal rims, twin leading breaks at both ends, muffler is welded on top slip on bottom. I looked for the tag on the wiring harness but it is missing.

Look down the front and back of chain run with a torch(flashlight), try removing chain tensioner and oil pump to look at chain also, if you fail to see split link after that use a Dremel to grind a link off the chain.

You only need to grind the head off two pins to seperate the chain.

It's still a pretty common size so you could get a length from a chain stockist.

These guys are in UK but I'm sure there are plenty of similar suppliers in the US.

If you remove the proper link (outer plate) you could replace with a clip-style or rivet-type master-link............if the original chain is OK..........no more than 20-degree side-flex.

The chain is the same part number used on all of this style twins...........CB and CL 350s..........and the CB750. My experience has been that the basic DID chain is inferior to the factory originals. Heavy duty units and DID racing chains are also available. A new chain can cause excessive wear to your original tensionor wheels.............
