can i just take the whole cover off to inspect everything?
i wasn't sure if there were any surprises in there, i figure the cam rides in the cover at very least. I think its just the cable itself thats bad. its all taped up and leaking from behind the homemade cable covering. Or perhaps the o ring should be preventing oil from going that high. I went to take the cable off and noticed i couldnt get it past the head stud nut. hence my question if i can just pull the whole cover off. fortunately where the cable bolts to the cover and cover bolts to the head its dry and i do have a gasket set if i mess it up taking it off. thanks.

Not understanding that, should clear by plenty. The camshaft is not supported by that cover and it can be removed with no issues except the gasket. You can get access to all of the tach seals and o-rings though, by just removing the cable and the cable fitting (one cross-screw). The source of that leak is usually the little rubber washer in the cable fitting.

Thank you for your input!
that would be a late night to many beers mistake on my part. I just had to unscrew the cable first, then pull the tube thing out and all was fine. i tried taking it out all at once by mistake.

my o ring seal was fine. I suspect my leak is actually from excessive head pressure forcing oil out any crevice it can fit. made another thread on it.
