SeatI've had this now for over a year, other than having it running after 30yrs of storage it has once again found itself sitting untouched. This fine recovered seat needed some attention so apart it came only to find a rotted pan. My stash is drying up and I could only find a late pan that was any good, it was missing the late front hook mount. I cut the the front and rear mounts from the early pan and fit them to late pan. Now I'm on to the seat foam. Anyone who has had these apart knows the fine construction with the foam blocks that collapse over the years and bulging sides. I've worked these a few times before and could never seem to find a glue that would hold everything together, until now. In my line of work we use a lot of 3M 5200 marine sealant. I've made new side foam pieces and then glued everything together with this sealant. The joints are one, if I try to pull it apart it rips the foam not the joint. Still have some fine tuning to fit the foam to the pan but it's looking good so far. One other item I needed was edging for the pan. The original was a soft rubber, I bought some off ebay, it's hard plastic. This didn't look like it was going to work until I took the heat gun to it and formed it to the edge. This is better than the original as it will not rot. Hopefully I'll finish this up soon with a picture of the finished product. It has to come out better than the ugly-ass cover that was on it!

Will be VERY interested to see the finished foam...........and covered seat. Before you assemble and/or paint the pan...........you may want to 'flatten' the two ribs between the clevice. HONDA advised to flatten with a hammer to solve the common problem of touching the battery.
Nice rear fender..............that aftermarket front unit looks good. The blade could be blasted and painted. I acquired a half-dozen of those BECK units several years ago..........Sold most but I think I have one left. I like the original chainguard. So.........the new seat means you expect to ride the bike more often???
Never knew there to be a problem with the seat touching the battery? I've probably owned close to (50) CL72/77's in the past 20+ years and have never had a problem. I can see there must have been a problem with the early pan breaking the front mount (have one sitting here) as the next ones had the added bracing across them. You're right though not a lot of clearance! The bike came with a late chainguard and I had just sold the early guard to a friend. He was in the process of selling a late CL at the time I was dealing to buy this one. We were scrambling schedules so we could get them swapped. I added the incentive of $100 back to get the early one back, it worked out in the end. Not sure if the front fender will stay or not, I have another A/M front, one that looks closer to original, steel and has the bead edge all the way around. I don't expect to be riding this one, the goal is correct as many problems as possible on a budget and send it off to a new owner. My plate is full, I need to be restoring my '63 CL72 type 2 domestic sometime soon. Dick Johnson
