cb160 Speedometer

Post by nickatnite » Wed Aug 26, 2015 1:15 pm

Need some guidance from you fine people!

My cb160 Speedo before it took a plop, the needle started jumping when i passed 40mph. It'd just up to 100+ Now that could just mean I was going so fast, or something is wrong with my speedo. I'll go with the ladder.

Anyways now it doesn't work and I was wondering if you guys had any experience with this? Would it be the speedo itself or just the cable?

If it's the speedo itself, does anyone have a spare good condition cb160 Speedometer?

I know it sounds pat, but they all do that. It's the speedo. very common for cb160's. that's the failure symptom. the thing is, you can buy used speedo's all day long for short $, but It's very likely you will end up in the same boat pretty quickly (or not). PaloAlto instruments can rebuild yours for about $350. or you can just go with no speedo. I have two bikes and have gone thru 4 speedo's in the last 6 years. I'm too cheap to ante up for a rebuild.
Good luck

cb160 speedo

I ran into the exact problem three days ago with my 65 Dream. I took the speedo apart and lubed it about a year ago. Took it for a ride on the local highway and it worked great until I hit 50 mph. Like yours mine started jumping back and forth. I took the inner speedometer cable out and lubed it with Lithium grease. Now works perfectly.

Hello Nick,

This won't fix your speedo, but it will give you acurate speed---- most bicycle stores sell wireless speedometers that you can fit to your 160.

You can program the "rolling circumferance" of your front wheel to have acurate speed and velcro the head to the glass of the 160 speedo, it can help to keep you out of trouble!
