Camshaft for Dummies

Post by modelman » Tue Aug 11, 2015 7:23 am

Remember those "for dummies" books a while back, pity they never did one for CB77 camshaft installations.

Just got the head back from having the seats re-cut, carefully re-assembled the shafts, etc, valves,
rockers, went for a trial re-fit of the tacho drive housing, EH?? Its on the WRONG SIDE!!
YO-YO brain here only managed to fit the whole shooting-match the wrong way round, ALL the mount-holes are the same & both end castings fitted ok, worked fine as well!!
All my big bikes, things like this are impossible as the camshafts won't fit at all if the wrong way round.
Something to think about for those like me who've never done this before.

Ho-Hum, I always did learn the hard way.

OK, its now the right way round (I think) but as you experts out there already know, once split, the points inner drive shaft will fit either way in its rectangular slot, looking at the pic, have I got it right, or is that now 180 out??

I can get the camshafts out in about 1 minute now !!

C,mon fellas, you experts out there must know this, is this right or wrong??

Logic dictates that the slash on the cam is 'up', but at this position BOTH points are open, shouldn't one be closed at least??

Your picture looks correct.
Mark (o) on sprocket at 12:00 o'clock.
Line (l) on points shaft at 12:00 o'clock.
"T" on the alternator should be at the pointer.

You will need to turn the rotor one full turn to marker at "T" and that is where you set the Rocker clearance and then the timing at "F" to set the points. . ................lm
