Pulling the dyno rotor?

Post by DianneB » Mon Jul 27, 2015 5:42 pm

I am trying to get the rotor off my '67 Dream so I can service the electric start clutch but I can't get the #### to move with a gear puller. Is there anything (other than the centre bolt) holding the rotor on? Any hidden setscrews or anything?

Nothing else holding it but the taper. The 16x1.5 threads in the rotor can be used with a bolt of the same thread to put some force on it, then a whack on the bolt with a heavy hammer will dislodge it. Usually the front axle has the same threads. You should search "rotor removal" on this site for more info.

If it's like my CB77 and probably is -

The retaining bolt is screwed into the end of the crankshaft which is tapered, has a Woodruff key, and matches the taper inside the rotor. The hole in the rotor is threaded. a bolt screwed into that hole pushes against the end of the crank lifting the rotor off.
Not a common bolt - 16mm x 1.5mm pitch.
I found one at a fastener supplier, it was high quality and $12 US. Yikes!, but all I could find.
I put a drop of oil on the threads, put it in finger tight, and one shot with the impact gun did the job.
Don't lose the Woodruff key or the starter clutch bits.

A less expensive source for such bolts can be Autozone, look at replacement Oil Drain Plugs the bolt size and pitch is usually shown on the packaging.

A 16 mm 1.5 pitch bolt walked the rotor right off with no problems at all after a gear puller wouldn't budge it.

Less potential damage, too.
