right side smoking

Post by mike1969 » Sat Oct 25, 2014 2:33 pm

Guess I spoke too soon about the right cyl. smoking. Hadn't run it for a coupe of weeks.
Was going to take it for the first ride today and the right side starting smoking again.
The clutch is sticking again so no ride for me.
On the plus side it starts instantly and it's charging 13.1 volts.

You might try running it a while with a little Seafoam added to the oil.

Yeah, sounds like it's worth a try. Hate to tear a good running engine apart.

right side smoking

The opinions given here were that the right side piston rings were clogged. Over the winter I filled the right cylinder with Marvel Mystery Oil. Got it running again last week and the smoking seems to be gone. I
I'm having another problem now. The clutch plates were stuck together so I got them separated. When I first start the bike neutral is easy to find and it shifts smoothly. After riding for just a few minutes the shifting is a little more difficult and finding neutral while running is impossible. When I shut the engine off shifting to neutral is easy.
Any clues?

Don't everyone answer at once.

Mike

That describes pretty much every bike I have ever owned. Clutches seem to drag a little more when hot than cold.

Could be plates warping a little, notches worn in clutch inner or outer, or just a general changing of toleranecs as the engine gets warm.

Have you dismantled the clutch to take a look?

Thanks for the reply Gman. I took the plates out and cleaned them last summer and the clutch worked ok. I didn't see anything unusual other than the material they are made of. They look like they are made of black tar paper. They still have grooves in them, but not real deep. The clutch doesn't slip.

They were stuck again over the winter and still looked the same. I have an old set from another Dream but they are much thicker. Was thinking of trying them.
