Square (or almost) rear shocks

Hi everyone,
I'm new to your forum. Have spent many hours over at CBX forum as I have 2 of the beasties.
But after selling two Old Brit ladies, there was a big gap in the shop.

I've looked for a nice CB77 for a long time, but they are almost as spendy as the CBX.
So I succumbed to a not bad shape CA77. After 2 hours playing around she started, although only one half did. I'm not worried about that, its probably the lead or plug.
What I'm more interested in is the rear shocks. They have always fascinated me since the first time I saw them in the early 60's. Yes I'm that old!!

I've searched the forum and found countless threads that fall short of anyone actually stating that they have in fact pulled them apart and rebuilt them.

So, has anyone actually done it??

What a great thread, I'm glad u high jacked it.
What's more I'm glad you're still involved after so many years.
Truly great workmanship, it's one of the joys of old bikes, figuring out how to rebuild. At least with machinery this age you still have parts that someone manually assembled, so you only have to figure out how.
Nowadays with robot assembles stuff we see a lot of shortcuts like knurled or rolled edges that need to be destroyed for dis-assembly.
Do you know if anyone ever came up with a source for the square chrome bottoms for the CA's?
I'm having a little difficulty searching the forum because it's set up quite a it different to the CBXWorld site. But I will persevere, I'm kind of excited with this bike, not quite as excited when I rebuilt my Goldie but up there.
I see quite a lot of gear from Thailand on flee bay, is it generally good stuff?

Thanks for your kind comments. I have been travelling a bit recently so I missed your post.

I just buy used shocks and get the lowers re-chromed. There have been plenty on eBay but the hit rate is probably 50%

As for seniors on the forum - Loud Mouse is the man who has been at it longest and is the 'go to' guy for advice, but there is plenty of experience in a number of heads. Just remember, Albert Einstein has no posts on this forum but that didn't make him stupid...... :-) My satisfaction comes from mending the unmendable.....

Stuff from Thailand is pretty good except for wheel rims which are often drilled for C95 Benly which has slightly different spoke angles. You need a good eye to see what is real and what is reproduction.

Ovelander in Australia do reproduction stainless mufflers and they are pretty good.

For the search facility the best advice is to click the "search for all items" button. That helps tremendously. Also a google search with '305' added will often find pages here.

When I have finished my 1961 CB72 project and my CYB72 'race kit' project the next one detailed here will be a 1960 Dream (maybe a UK and US spec pair together).
