Is this a scrambler or a frankenbike?

Post by jshokie » Sun Apr 05, 2015 9:32 pm

Hey guys, I have been checking out the forums all day trying to learn more information about my find. I was told that it was a "62 Dream modified into a chopper", but I'm thinking it is a modified scrambler? It was taken apart before it was stored, so I am still getting the parts from here.

Here are the vin numbers I have tried some online vin decoders without any luck:
Frame: CL77-1030463
Motor: CL77E-1005514

The guy that gave it to me is still trying to find the title and back wheel. Here are some photos of what I have "pulled out" so far. Also some of the welds don't look factory, so I'm thinking they have been modded. Also the seat doesn't look like typical scramblers.

Would I be crazy to try and restore this as a hobby project? :)

Thanks in advance for the help!

That is a Scrambler frame that's been butchered. You can see where it was cut in the back and the backbone either heated and bent or cut, bent and welded. Judging by the ugly welds on the back I'd say it was heated and bent. By the numbers that is not the engine that came with the bike. By the frame number I would venture to say it's a 1966 frame with a 1965 motor. The seat is a king/queen chopper seat.
These bikes aren't rare. With that being said I'd look for an uncut frame if you want to try and save it. Personally I'd pass but that's entirely up to you. For what is missing, you'd have far more into it than what it would be worth to restore it, unless you have a personal attachment to that specific bike.

Good luck- HT

I agree with Tom - probably better to look out for a replacement frame if you are going to do anything. It looks to me that the seat rails have just been cut, bent down and welded halfway down the rear frame section. They should join at the top shock mounts. It might be possible to fix that.....

The only part I can see from a Dream is the front wheel.

Anything is possible if you have time, skill and patience. Whatever you choose to do, have fun!
