It doesn't sound like you removed and inspectd your centrifugal oil filter. It seems what you did was remove your oil pump. The oil pump is on the underside of the motor and held by 6 bolts. There is a screen that goes over the pump and that's what you saw when you looked with a mirror. There are two gaskets used in the assembly. Oil pump, gasket, oil screen, another gasket and then it gets installed on the bottom case.
The centrifugal filter is on the left side of the motor behind the oil filter cover.

Oil slinger and battery

Post by conbs » Fri Apr 10, 2015 7:16 pm

I would not hook up a car battery to a Dream, Too many amp hours. If you do not turn on the lights you should be able to hook up a charger that is 2 amps or less and use the kick start to get your bike started. With the light off you are just powering the coil.

if you have the early battery it is only about 2" wide and pretty long. A picture of your battery holder will show what you have

Your oil slinger is under the case on the left side of you motor. I suggest getting a new gasket for the cover and removing the whole thing. If there is oil in the bike it will drain out when you crack that cover, hence the gasket. When you take the cover off spread out a clean cloth under the engine on that side. There is a washer and a little pin in/on the shaft that the slinger spins on. Be careful not to loose them.

I know it is frustrating to go slowly but, you will be glad you did. But, buying new parts because you did something to ruin the good ones you had is much more painful.

Best wishes for success.

12N9-3A. Make sure the negative post is on the left side if you are looking at batteries that cross reference for CA77. MotoBatt makes a nice AGM battery, MB9U.
