general help

Post by wrencher » Sun Mar 08, 2015 6:40 pm

I have what I believe is a 66 305 dream and my questions are:
I want to change and put fresh oil in but could not find the filter or do you just drain and refill?
It will need a battery but don't know if it 6 or 12 volt. how do you tell?

thanks

Its a centrifugal oil-'slinger' under the left engine case cover. If the motor has been sitting for a few years.........strongly suggest cleaning it. Get a manual for instructions.........aka the Bill Silver CD

The later '60s CA77s are 12-volt................check the old battery, or a bulb, or the fuse-holder, or the tag on the wire-harness.

I recommend 30w Detergent oil........available at NAPA and a few other places. Some others will suggest other oil but I have had good luck with it.

Due to others recommending the oil of their choice I no longer care what oil is used in these engines as long as the level is correct.
I've split a lot of engines with CRAP in the case!. ..........lm

My Bad.............make that NON-Detergent 30w.

I agree with Ed about the crap in the motor.......especially in the slinger............but ANY oil is better than NO oil!

general help

Hey thanks guys,
Looking forward to getting this bike going. Already bought spark plugs and 2 qts. of 30 wt
non detergent oil. As far as the battery there wasn't any battery so I will have to do what was suggested as far as looking for a tag or fuse or check the bulbs. the place where the battery goes doesn't look like it's for a 12 volt. (looks to small) but will check it out.

Again thanks for the info.
I will be checking back in as I progress on this.

Hey guys
Just checking back in. Can't believe it's been almost a month since I started to work on this.
working 7 days the last few weeks, but hopefully it will slow back to 5 days for awhile now so
I'll time to finish this.
What I've done so far:
took 6 bolts out of oil slinger and it was basically just a gear and was clean and free. I used a mirror and light and looked up in the motor and around the bottom is a screen about ¾"and it was clean and didn't really see how to take it out but don't think it needs to as clean as it is. so I just put the slinger back on.
As far as the wiring, not having too much luck on finding any tags, but does have a fuse holder by where it hooks up to the battery and had a 'SFE14' fuse. also the the headlight is marked D2 and taillight is marked D2R. I'm thinking 12v since this is the later model dream but will listen to others who have more experience on these. If agreed this is 12v do you have a part # for a battery.
For now I thought I might just hook the leads up to a used car battery I have just to turn it over and see if I can get it to run unless the car idea is not a good idea. I will wait to hear back before I try as i don't want to make any more problems. lol
Anyway that's where I'm at and I'll wait to hear back before I go any further.

BTW I found a manual at a used book store and the slinger it showed looked like the screen part came out with it and on mine it didn't come out like that??

Ok thanks in advance for all your help on this.

Dream

Post by mike1969 » Sun Apr 05, 2015 6:57 am

Wrencher, Your Dream is 12 volt. The size of the battery depends on what year your Dream is. Early ones had a long short and narrow battery, later had a tall and wide battery. If it is a 66 you're in luck and it takes a generic battery you can buy anywhere. A pic of the battery holder would help.
