I haven't made a firm decision about the bulb type yet. I need to get to the auto parts store. I would like a cooler bulb and I think an LED would be, but I have to find one that would fit into the headlight bucket without hitting the speedometer housing. Some that I've seen online have a rather large housing. I'd also like to find a mounting ring/socket for whatever bulb I use so that it can be changed easily.

If you have suggestions, I'd like to hear them.

I've finally received an couple of H4 bulb holders and was able to work on this today. The holders were very difficult to find. I tried the local salvage yard, but they would not help unless I told them exactly which vehicle had the holders I wanted. I didn't know, so I went back to the Internet and found some for an old Ford truck light retrofit.

The bulb holder was made to be installed inside the headlight bucket with the bulb held opposite the normal way. I had to drill it out so that the bulb would fit through it.

The holder, then the bulb with the holder with were trial fitted into the headlight bucket. I believe that it will all work, but the light bulb tabs will need to be bent down 90 degrees.

Now I need to permanently fasten the holder to the back of the headlight. I haven't decided whether to do that with solder or heat resistant sealant. I prefer solder, but have to test my steel soldering skills on some scrap first.

Next update with a working bulb.
