First post and soon-to-be owner of '65 CL77

Post by rideordie » Tue Mar 03, 2015 3:41 pm

Hey guys! This is my first post and glad that I stumbled upon this awesome forum!

So, I recently picked up a '65 CL77 project bike that was stored indoors with very little surface rust for $400. Now, I might lose some credibility here but it is not a 'numbers matching bike'. Here's what I got: a roller frame (CL77), a '65 Dream 305 engine (turns over nicely), has the wiring and harness all installed, aftermarket headlamp, aftermarket (new) scrambler pipes and original rear fender. That's it. I need a decent amount of parts (bigger items being carbs for the engine, tank, front fender, and seat) and was wondering if you guys have any suggestions of where I could find some of these parts? I would like to keep it in its original look with a few customization's such as different paint/seat and am not going to do anything stupid like chop it or cafe it. I want it to still have its original nostalgia with a modern(ish) twist. Thanks in advance and feel free to state any opinions you may have!

Welcome. Tank, seat, front fender and stay are about the hardest and most costly items to find. You say it is a CA engine so unless the head has been changed it is a single carb set up. E-bay is where you will find the most used parts needed. Post in the parts wanted on this site and you might get lucky. Add your location and that might help also.

Nice find.

Probably worth sourcing another donor CL motor. There are few different covers, plates etc.

Twin carb vs single, 180 degree crank vs 360, etc etc. Different gear box, but could be used.

Thanks guys! Again, I'm a noob, although I have researched this bike for quite a while now...the CA77 not so much. From what I can tell through my research, the engine will fit the frame and if I wanted to, could also split the single carb into two, correct? I am curious to see how that CA engine sounds coming through those scrambler pipes though!

The single carb and twin carb heads are completely different. There is no bolt-on manifold like a Triumph.

If your roller frame is a '65 it is the small-brake version of the CL77...........the fork legs will be steel and the steel fender and brace are the same as used on the '65 CL72 model....but very different from the big-brake '66 and '67 production. The rear fender and brace (grab-bar) are the same as on '66 models.........but not the '67 production. All tanks will fit, but the units with the cross-over tube and corresponding petcock are correct. The '65 and '66 CL77 seats interchange........earlier seats will fit but have different length rear 'legs'.......the '67 seat will NOT fit.

Sell the CA motor and buy a CL unit..........period.

Welcome to the group...............pics are worth............"

Thanks for the replies guys! Much appreciated!

So, will the CA motor not fit or is it simply a matter of preference/performance?

Will post pics soon....
